Don’t Forget To Pack Sunscreen!

Did you know the original meaning of the word desert was an abandoned place? It’s not as abandoned as you think. The desert is a whole world filled with lots of sand (about 20% of deserts are covered in sand), thriving plants, and plenty of animals. You may not think of this as your ideal vacation or a place of relaxation, but you might change your mind if you travel there. 

Take the Sahara desert for instance: located in North Africa, it’s known for its scorching hot days and freezing cold nights, and it’s the world’s largest “hot” desert. Yes, that’s right, and I bet you didn’t know there was such a thing as a “cold” desert either; there is! Antarctica in fact is actually one, and it is the biggest one on the planet.

The Gobi desert is located north-west of China and is famous for its incredible fossil finds. This desert is located along the path of the Silk Road, and a lot of famous cities are sprawled out there, too. 

But my favorite desert is located in Australia, and it’s called the Simpson desert. And no, the Simpsons from the cartoon do not live there. This beautiful desert has incredible rust-colored sand and giant dunes. 

There are plenty of places to explore when it comes to deserts. The old sandbox in the backyard can be entertaining for a time, but jump out, pack your bags, and travel to a real sandbox!
