A Charcoal Sketch – Sarah Richter

A woman drawn in charcoal
holds her hand up, clenched
to the melting skies above her
claiming her own through
the energy beyond her skin.

It explodes into her palm
and she takes it in, tense
with the blinding white blood
dripping at once from
the sparks in the clouds.

Her hair, black carbon soot,
the natural residue of flames,
covers her darkened face.
She stands with assurance,
a woman of mettle and high
on the power of her fire.
